Editorial :

Welcome on the new site of the GDR SIGMA. Early 2005, the board of the CNRS had renewed its accreditation to the GDR SIGMA for the new four years (2005-2008). The activities performed during the last four years are presented on the site of the Université de La Rochelle. An history of the Cassini group is available on the site of Marseille.

From nearly fifteen years, occidental countries developed research groups to federate national works in Geographical Information System such as (NCGIA – National Center for Geographical Information and Analysis (http://www.ncgia.ucsb.edu/), in the United States of America, RRL – Research Regional laboratories, (http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/home/research/rrl.html), in United Kingdom, Nexpri (http://www.nexpri.nl/website/), in the Netherlands, Réseau Géoïde (http://www.geoide.ulaval.ca/), in Canada, the Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information CRC - SI, (http://spatialinfocrc.org/), in Australia, ... The renew of the accreditation of the GDR SIGMA is embedded in this movement. The Bologna process in education enforces the international visibility for the french research in the geomatic field. Our french offer is clearly identified mainly to develop responses to the different european proposals such as the  7th
Framework Programme of the European Community.

From the historical point of view, France has always been present in this domaine mainly by the expertise of the Institut Géographique National (IGN) and the participations in the different normalisation groups or exchange groups as well as in commissions such as International Cartographical Association (http://www.icaci.org) or EuroSDR (http://www.eurosdr.org). The number of international conferences affilied to great scientific labels of quality such as ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) for the conferences ACM GIS (http://acmgis2004.cti.gr), Springer Verlag for the conferences Web and Wireless Geographical Information System (http://lbd.epfl.ch/e/conferences/w2gis05) shows the interest of the international community in this research area.

France must be present in this growing research area. We must favour the links between the different research groups. The GDR is devoted to this aim.
